We saw Orcas today on the ferry!
I apologize for the quality of these pictures - I had my bomb-proof, Olympus Stylus Tough in my pocket (shockproof, waterproof, point and shoot) -- just grabbed it and started taking pictures -- wasn't too concerned with how beautiful they were going to be :)
All of these photos, except for the last one, are looking north.
3 Orcas in this photo -- I think the one on the right is J1 (aka "Ruffles)
This last photo is looking west, towards Blake Island -- there was a group of whales between the boat and the island, but they're too far away to be seen in this photo.
Sighting Details:
Nov 16, 2010, approx 4:10 PM
On the Southworth to Fauntleroy (West Seattle) Ferry, just past Vashon Island.
Many whales, males, females, and juveniles, by the look of it. I'm assuming this is J-Pod as I saw a whale that looked like photos I've seen of J1 (Ruffles). There were 2 or 3 whales on the surface at any given time and I even saw one breech fully out of the water off towards the Alki Lighthouse. (feeding on salmon?)
The pod looked to be moving basically south westward, towards the break between Blake Island and Vashon.
I've lived in the area for 9 years now and this is the first time I've ever seen an orca in the wild -- neato!
